The San Jose City Council is expected to finalize the renaming of what was once Plaza de Cesar Chavez on Tuesday.
The city covered the late labor leader’s name and removed the memorial plaque after serious and credible allegations of sexual abuse and assault were made against him.
Since then, the city has worked with stakeholders to find a more appropriate way to honor the labor movement rather than one of the people behind it.
After several community events and a public survey, two favorites emerged and will be combined as the final recommendation.
On Tuesday, the City Council will vote on whether to approve “Plaza del Pueblo de San Jose” as the new and permanent name of the downtown landmark.
People in San Jose submitted more than 600 name suggestions, and the naming survey drew more than 10,000 responses.
