K9 Rich receives protective vest through charitable donation

STATEWIDE–K9 Rich, an Indiana State Police canine officer, now has critical protection on duty thanks to Heather and David Jans of Mundelein, Illinois. The couple sponsored a bullet and stab protective vest for Rich through Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a Massachusetts-based nonprofit dedicated to safeguarding police dogs across America. The custom-fitted vest bears a personal touch: “This gift of protection provided by Heather and DJ.”

Protecting Those Who Protect Us

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a 501(c)(3) charity established in 2009, provides potentially lifesaving body armor to law enforcement K9s nationwide. The organization’s mission extends beyond vests to include various forms of assistance for these four-legged officers who regularly face danger alongside their human counterparts.

The vests are U.S.-made, custom-fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Each vest weighs 4-5 pounds and comes with a five-year warranty, offering protection that could mean the difference between life and death during high-risk operations.

A National Impact Built on Individual Donations

Since opening its doors, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has equipped more than 6,677 K9 officers with protective vests valued at $6.9 million — reaching law enforcement agencies in all 50 states, funded entirely through private and corporate donations.

The numbers tell a sobering story: roughly 30,000 law enforcement K9s serve communities throughout the United States, yet many still lack adequate protection. The program accepts applications for dogs at least 20 months old who are actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s wearing expired vests also qualify for replacement equipment.

How to Help Protect Police K9s

While Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions of any amount, a single donation of $1,050 sponsors one complete vest — which carries an actual value of $1,800.
