Fraudulent emails target Indianapolis permit applicants

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS — The Department of Business and Neighborhood Services is warning permit applicants and holders about fraudulent messages impersonating city departments and employees.

The department said scammers are targeting people with all types of permits. It has notified other affected departments, alerted the city’s technology agency, and posted a fraud alert on the Accela Citizen Access permit portal. The department is monitoring the situation and working to notify the public.

The department advises permit applicants and holders to:

  • Be cautious of messages asking for personal information or urging them to wire money or use another payment method.
  • Verify payment requests through the Accela portal or by contacting the department at 317-327-8700. The public also can visit the department’s lobby in the City-County Building from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Contact the department using information from a trusted source if they are unsure whether an email is legitimate.
  • Check the sender’s email address. Scammers may spoof email addresses, and official city emails come from an indy.gov account.
