East San Jose voting sites change ahead of Election Day

Election Day is one week away, and some voters in East San Jose have learned their voting sites may not be open.

Joseph George Middle School, a campus the Alum Rock School District closed last year because of declining enrollment, was going to open on Election Day as a voting center.

But over the last few weeks, vandals broke into the school and destroyed classrooms, ripping out cables and electrical wiring and shattering windows.

The damage is so bad that the Alum Rock School District told the Registrar of Voters that the school could no longer be a host site for voters next Tuesday.

Nearby White Road Baptist Church also recently canceled abruptly.

The Registrar of Voters sent affected voters a letter alerting them to the changes and announcing that nearby Latino College Prep Academy will open as an alternative.

The Registrar says it is prepared for the change but wants to make sure all voters know about it.

“We always have backup vote centers that are available to us, and we want to maintain access to the voters,” Registrar of Voters spokesperson Michael Borja said.

As workers continue to count ballots that are already in, the Registrar is reminding voters that there are also roughly 100 secure ballot drop boxes throughout the county, including at libraries.

Another 100 early voting centers will open this weekend, including on Halloween.
